Carnival: ‘People’s Art and ‘Taking back the Streets’

International Conference

July 31-August 3, 2008 – Wednesday 6.00pm to 11.00pm; Thursday and Friday 9.00am to 5.30pm, Saturday and Sunday 9.00am to 12.30pm.

Accolade Centre at York University and Kofler Centre at the University of Toronto

Featuring Peter Minshall and a stellar array of speakers from the Caribbean and around the world – academic experts, designers, photographers, writers, musicians and Mas dancers – with additional sessions organized by the International Steelpan Association, this conference provided an intellectual view of Carnival and Caribana.  Ten years after the first conference on Carnival in the United States, this event was designed to bring a fresh perspective, and provided an exceptionally rich selection of papers on Carnival.  It was held in conjunction with the Caribana Festival in Toronto, offering opportunities of participating in this popular celebration.  In addition to readings by Caribbean writers, theatrical and musical performances, documentary films were showcased, together with exhibitions on Carnival and on Calypso.
