The Evolution of Gospel Music

Toronto – Against the backdrop of Black History Month, a two-day event called ‘The Evolution of Gospel Music’ took place on February 7th. This powerful stage production utilized drama, dance, and music to trace the evolution of this unique genre.

A strong cast of musicians, dancers and singers from Toronto volunteered to take the audience through a historical journey that was often painful, yet always uplifting. The Toronto Mass Choir (TMC) was joined by members of the York University Gospel Choir, lead actor and singer Aadin Church, powerhouse singers Karen Jules and Marlene O’Neill and other seasoned gospel performers such as Amoy Levy, Peter Moncrieffe and organist, Jermaine Stern. Jasmyn Fyffe, alumnus of York University leads the dance troupe ASM (As the Spirit Moves).

Toronto Mass Choir Director Karen Burke says she was thrilled to be a part of the creative team for this production, which was presented in the 30th year celebration of the recognition of Black History Month in Canada.

“One of the best ways to celebrate Black History Month and educate people about issues such as slavery, Jim Crow laws, and human rights is through music," said Burke.  "Many young people are unaware of the major contributions that Blacks have made in the US and in Canada over the past 400 years.  Gospel music has been the soundtrack of the African Diaspora in North America.  This wonderful event traces the evolution of gospel music through the eyes of history and faith.”

‘The Evolution of Gospel Music’ took place on Saturday, February 7th at  Global Kingdom Ministries, 1250 Markham Rd. in Scarborough at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20/Adults, $10/Students.
