Jhon Picard Byron from the Université d’ État in Haiti (UEH) is one of the panelists at the student–initiated conference “Transcending the Border: Dialogues on the Challenges of Hispaniola” which will take place at York’s Glendon College on Saturday, March 5, 2011.
As a partner of the Tubman Institute through the UEH, Jhon is a participant in the Summer Institute that Tubman will host at York from August 20 to 27, 2011. Tubman members and partners will recall that the previous Summer Institute was hosted by the UEH in December 2009, just weeks before the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January 2010.
More recently, Jhon was a guest at York for two weeks in November 2010 hosted by the faculty of Education. During this visit the Education faculty, Tubman and Glendon College began a preliminary discussion about the possibility of reconstructing the "African Studies" section that was established in the Institut Supérieur d’Études et de Recherches en Sciences Sociales of UEH. The project foresees the establishment of a masters programme in African and African Diasporic studies in the Institut Supérieur d’Études et de Recherches en Sciences Sociales of UEH and a chair of African History into the École Normale Supérieure.
