After growing up as one of the only non-white members of her community [in Alberta] Karina Vernon was inspired to research and expose the writings of early black settlers in Canada.
Vernon’s current research interests include black Canadian prairie writing, and, the investigation of urban "renewal" and gentrification processes on collective memory in Canada.
